Solemnity of All Saints - Nov. 1

A few years ago I led a pilgrimage to Italy where we venerated many saints, including St. Francis of Assisi, St. (Padre) Pio, St. Peter and St. Paul. Whenever I am in Rome, I also make it a point to venerate the tomb of St. John Paul II, who is near and dear to my heart. Also, about two weeks ago, I received several emails from people wishing me a “Happy Feast Day” on October 13, the day the Church remembers the life of St. Edward the Confessor, my namesake.

These are among many of the saints that the Church has proclaimed in its official calendar. They had a popular and large following after the deaths and miracles can be attributed to their intercession. But it is not the Church that makes saints. God makes saints. So what of those holy souls who are in heaven, but not officially proclaimed by our Church. Well, they are saints too. Today is their feast day — the Solemnity of All Saints.

I think of the holy men and women I have met in my own lifetime, who have gone before me marked with the sign of faith. I think of my mom and my sister who kept the faith while dying of cancer. I think of their witness, holiness, and fidelity have drawn out the best in me. Perhaps you have your own saints who call you to be more faithful to God, more loving of your neighbor, and closer to the Church.
