A memorial Mass and celebration of life for Patrick F. McCartan will be scheduled at a later date. McCartan, 86, died on Nov. 30.
He was a man of deep faith, a member of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Chagrin Falls, and an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame and Notre Dame Law School.
McCartan was active with many Catholic organizations and charities, including Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland, where he served as an honorary trustee; Catholic Diocese of Cleveland Foundation; and University of Notre Dame Board of Trustees, which he chaired 2000-2007. He was elected to the board in 1989 after serving 10 years on the Notre Dame Law School Advisory Council. In addition to chairing the board, he served as a Fellow, one of the 12-member group that is the university’s ultimate governing body. During his time as board chair, the board elected and oversaw the inauguration of Father John Jenkins, C.S.C. as the 17thpresident of the university.
Bishop emeritus Anthony Pilla presented McCartan with the Archbishop Edward F. Hoban Award in 1994. The honor, the highest award presented by the diocese to individuals and organizations, was presented for distinguished service to the diocese.
McCartan also received the Laetare Medal from Notre Dame, the oldest and most prestigious honor given to American Catholics whose life exemplified their faith. He also received an honorary degree from Notre Dame and the Torch of Liberty Award in 1998 from the Anti-Defamation League.
Other boards on which McCartan served include Ursuline College, Gilmour Academy and the Cleveland Clinic. He chaired the board of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association and served as president of the Bar Association of Greater Cleveland.
McCartan was a prominent attorney who served as a law clerk for a Supreme Court justice, a well-respected trial attorney at Jones Day and managing partner of the firm from 1993 to 2002. He oversaw a significant expansion of Jones Day both in the United States and globally.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years Lois Ann, daughter Mary Karen McCartan DeSantis, and two grandsons. A son, Patrick F. McCartan III, predeceased him.
