Isn’t it interesting that God chooses to come among us in a family? But, it’s not all that surprising. God created us for family life. Everyone comes from a family, myself included. And even single people, like myself, have a family that we belong to. It makes sense then, that Jesus, who came to us in human flesh, would also become part of a family — the Holy Family.
It is in the family that we are first taught the basics of life. How to walk, what to eat, when to give thanks, what to avoid, what to seek.
The family is meant, at its best, to teach us how to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Only living with others do we learn how to give and forgive. Only in a family — including the family of humanity — do we learn how to love. God gives us to each other to teach us how to be more like him.
Today, we are reminded that Jesus is at the heart of the Holy Family. And, Jesus is at the heart of every family that strives for holiness. It is by our embracing of Jesus that makes us holy.
May we strive to bring Jesus to life for those we live with, care for, and love. May we allow Jesus to come to our world through us. May we look to the Holy Family for inspiration.
God bless you and those you love.
Merry Christmas!
