Jesus calls out the scribes and Pharisees as those who preach, but do not practice what they preach.
Saint Paul admitted his inconsistencies and sinfulness when he said that he did the things he didn’t want to do and didn’t do the things he knew he should do. None of us are perfect. Yes, we are flawed people: all of us. But the issue with the Pharisees and scribes was that they would not admit it.
Jesus reminds those of us who take him seriously to be humble about our goodness out of the realization of our sinfulness: “whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
