Faithful surpass $1 million match challenge to kick off 2021 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal

The faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland responded generously to an anonymously donated $1 million matching gift challenge to begin the 2021 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal. In the first month that followed the in-pew weekend (Feb. 20-21), $1.4 million was given by 5,643 donors across Northeast Ohio. Through this effort, the Annual Appeal, which still faces serious challenges presented by the pandemic, received a boost toward its annual goal of $13.5 million.

“People in the pews at their parish, people watching livestreamed Masses and others responding to social media posts came together under this matching gift umbrella to answer the call to ‘Love Your Neighbor,’ which is the theme of this year's Catholic Charities Appeal,” said Patrick Grace, executive director of the Catholic Community Foundation, manager of the Annual Appeal. “We are most grateful to the donors who chose to generously support their brothers and sisters in need throughout Northeast Ohio. We are also grateful to our pastors and volunteers, whose efforts have brought awareness to Catholic Charities and the important work they accomplish, especially in light of the challenges of the pandemic. Our efforts will continue in order to reach the annual goal in funding the vital social services of Catholic Charities delivered throughout Northeast Ohio.”

The Catholic Charities Appeal continues through Dec. 31. The appeal raises funds for critical issues such as fighting addiction, serving people who are hungry and homeless, assisting seniors and families through urban family centers, and providing educational and social engagements for people with disabilities. Video stories of hope are available to be viewed online by clicking here.

Catholic Charities is one of the region's most significant health and human service providers, assisting more than 400,000 people in need annually throughout the eight-county Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, which encompasses Ashland, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit, and Wayne counties.

Donations to the appeal can be made securely by texting CCHope to 41444, or online. Donors also can call 216-696-6525, Ext. 1049 to donate.
