April 5, 2021

AKRON, OHIO — St. Vincent-St. Mary High School (STVM) is pleased to announce that effective July 1, 2021, Leo P. Hyland will become the next President of the school. Mr. Hyland is a 1977 graduate of another Marianist institution, Cathedral Latin School in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Hyland will replace Thomas Carone, the previous President at STVM. Mr. Carone was recently named as the President of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland which is rooted in Ursuline and Marianist traditions, effective July 1.

The school conducted a nationwide search over the course of the past six months with the assistance of the Carmon Group of Westlake, Ohio, before selecting Mr. Hyland as its new President. Mr. Hyland is currently the President of Cleveland Central Catholic High School in Cleveland. Prior to his time at Cleveland Central Catholic, he served as the Director of Advancement at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in Chardon, Ohio. Mr. Hyland also served previously as the Director of Special Gifts for the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Mr. Hyland’s experience in these prior roles make him exceptionally qualified for the position at STVM. His primary charges will be to provide visionary and strategic leadership implementing a newly emerging strategic plan, advancing the school’s mission, and actively engaging in all efforts associated with alumni engagement, fundraising, fiscal management, and admissions.

Jack Weisensell, Chairperson of the Executive Board of Trustees of STVM announced Mr. Hyland’s hiring. “We are so pleased that we were able to attract Mr. Hyland to this process and to eventually be able to retain him for this position. His experience and his leadership style both at Cleveland Central Catholic, and also at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, made him the unanimous choice of our board for this position. We are so excited to have him as the leader of our school and truly cannot wait for him to be on campus and get started in the position.”

For Mr. Hyland, the prospect of returning to another instition with Marianist roots was a significant factor in his decision to make the move. Mr. Hyland said: “I am thrilled and honored to be selected to lead such a vibrant and tradition-rich high school. This is an exciting opportunity to build on St. Vincent-St. Mary’s strong legacy by creating a shared vision for its bright future.”

Mr. Hyland attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Communications. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Non-Profit Organizations from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Mr. Hyland is a member of Leadership Cleveland.
