It was a picture-perfect day as golfers hit the links at Silver Lake Country Club on June 14 for the 20th Borromeo Seminary Challenge Scholarship Golf Outing. Golfers included priests, parents of priests, friends and other Borromeo supporters.

Father Mark Latcovich, president/rector of the seminary, said the event was a sell-out. Borromeo seminarians assisted at the event.

Brett Hazard chaired the event, as he has done every year since it began.

“The golf outing is a fundraiser for the Challenge Scholarship,” Father Latcovich said. Seminarians who have successfully completed the first semester of their first year at Borromeo are eligible for the scholarship. Valued at about $3,500, it covers room and board for the second semester of the student’s first year at Borromeo.

Since its inception, the golf outing has raised more than $250,000 for the Challenge Scholarship Fund. Father Latcovich said about $266,000 from the fund has been awarded to first-year seminarians.

Bishop Edward Malesic mingled with the golfers as they headed into the clubhouse, where he joined them for dinner, prizes and drawings. Among the raffle prizes were a dinner for 10 cooked by Father Latcovich and served by seminarians and a cruise on a luxury sailboat.

As he offered prayer before dinner, the bishop noted that it was the 40th anniversary of Father Latcovich’s ordination to the priesthood. “Congratulations to him and his classmates for their hard work and dedication to their vocation,” he said.

“And thank you to all who support our ministry of preparing men for the priesthood,” the bishop said.

“We are fortunate in the Diocese of Cleveland to see enrollment in our seminaries increase. Thanks to your continued support and prayers, we can provide a solid formation program for our priests. May God bless you for your goodness,” Father Latcovich added.

Tournament sponsors included Harrington Electrical Co., Geauga Mechanical, John G. Johnson Construction, J.F.D. Landscapes, RG Digital and Innovative Interior Construction.
