First Friday clubs plan to resume in-person programming
In yet another sign that life is returning to normalcy, two of the three First Friday clubs in the Diocese of Cleveland announced plans to resume their lunch programs. The third will hold at least one more virtual program in August.

The First Friday clubs in the diocese are:

  • The First Friday Club of Cleveland, which meets at noon the first Thursday of the month at The City Club, 850 Euclid Ave., in downtown Cleveland. For information or to be added to the mailing list, email admin@firstfridayclubcleveland.org or call 216-589-9852.
  • The First Friday Forum of Lorain County, which meets at 11:30 a.m. the first Friday of the month at Lorain County Community College’s Spitzer Center. Cost is $20 for lunch and the program. Reservation details are forthcoming.
  • The First Friday Club of Greater Akron, which meet at noon the first Friday of the month at Tangier Restaurant, 532 W. Market St., Akron. Cost is $20 for lunch and the program, which can be paid at the door or mail a check to the First Friday Club office, 795 Russell Ave., Akron, Ohio 44308. Reservations are due the Monday prior to the program.

The First Friday Club of Cleveland will forego a program in July and has scheduled a service and a social event instead. Members are invited to participate in a service project to assist the St. Augustine Hunger Center with its hot meal program on July 9. Two shifts are available: Shift A, 9-11 a.m., or Shift B, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the hunger center, 1400 Howard Ave., Cleveland. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Email Mary Sawyer at admin@firstfridayclubcleveland.org and indicate which shift in order to reserve a spot.

There will be a summer social 5-7 p.m. July 15 at Forest City Shuffleboard, 4506 Lorain Ave., Cleveland. The event will include food, fellowship and shuffleboard. Registration will open soon.

The club plans to have a webinar for its August program. Details are forthcoming.

Bishop Edward Malesic will address the First Friday Forum of Lorain County on Aug. 6. The Sept. 3 program will feature Sister Melanie Svoboda, SND, who will speak on “Hanging onto hope in our Imperfect World.” The Oct. 1 speaker will be Meg McIntyre, manager of community education for Genesis House, who will speak on “Domestic Violence Awareness in Lorain County.” Radio personality Trapper Jack will address the club on “Blind Faith and Mary, his Favorite Spokeswoman,” on Nov. 5. Registration information will be announced soon.

The First Friday Club of Greater Akron will welcome Sister Juliana Beck, OSU on July 9. She has been director of Catholic Worker Akron since July 2020 and will discuss living and working at the Akron Catholic Worker and how the teachings of Dorothy Day enriched her spirituality. Reservation deadline is June 29. See above for details on cost and how to make a reservation.

The Aug. 6 program will feature State Rep. Tavia Galonski, D-35, Akron. The location will be announced soon. Francine Costantini, who heads the Youth Ministry Office for the Diocese of Cleveland, will address the club on Sept. 3 at Tangier. The Oct. 1 speaker, again at Tangier, will be Frank O’Linn, superintendent of Catholic schools for the diocese. And finally, Sister Toni Palermo, who played professional softball before becoming a nun, earning multiple academic degrees and teaching, will speak on Dec. 3 at Tangier. See above for reservation details.
