A letter from Bishop Malesic in response to recent apostolic letter 'Traditionis Custodes'

News of the Diocese

July 19, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last week the Holy Father, Pope Francis, promulgated a document regulating the use of liturgical texts prior to the reform of the Roman Missal in 1970. "Traditionis Custodes" and the accompanying apostolic letter contains legislation to be observed in the celebration of the Eucharist according to the 1962 Missal of St. Pope John XXIII.

Please know that I will be consulting with my advisors and those currently responsible for the celebration of the Eucharist according to what has been termed the Extraordinary Form of the Mass to better understand the content of Traditionis Custodes and implement it within the liturgical life of the Diocese of Cleveland.

At this time, I grant temporary permission for those priests competent in celebrating the Eucharist according to the 1962 Missal to continue to do so in private and in churches that as of July 16, 2021 have publicly scheduled these Masses. This permission is in effect until such time that decisions are made regarding the implementation of Traditionis Custodes in the Diocese of Cleveland.

I am grateful for all those devoted to the prayerful celebration of the holy sacrifice of the Mass and whose belief is centered on Our Lord truly present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we obediently go forward with the Holy Father in faith, hope and charity.
