As it prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary with a gala on Sept. 18, Gilmour Academy blessed the Colleran Family Nature-Based Learning Center, the hub of the school’s nature-based learning activities, on Aug. 27.
During the upcoming gala, chaired by Lorraine Dodero, the school also will spotlight the recently opened Lorraine and Bill Dodero Center for Performing Arts.
The Colleran Family Nature-Based Learning Center, built through the generosity of the Colleran Family Foundation and Brian and Gretchen Colleran, is located on the InterCampus Loop between the Floyd E. Stefanski Ice Center and the Lower School.
As part of the celebration, students gave tours of the nature-based learning facilities, including the greenhouse, outdoor classroom area, pollinator, herb and vegetable gardens, the weather station, apiary and chicken coop.
Gilmour’s nature-based learning initiative is in keeping with the school’s mission “to develop the competence to see and the courage to act in creating a more humane and just society.” School officials said they work to accomplish this by harnessing the power of place-based education to cultivate in students a deep sense of environmental appreciation, consciousness and social responsibility. The Lorraine and Bill Dodero Performing Arts Center features feature a 300-seat main theater, an 86-seat black box theater, a scene shop, costume shop, speech and debate practice rooms, a presentation room and music ensemble enclave, as well as an art gallery hall. Lorraine and Bill Dodero jumpstarted the project with the lead gift in 2014. Their daughter, Corrine Dodero Salvador, a 2002 Gilmour alumna, was involved in drama during her years at the school.
Lorraine Dodero, well known for her philanthropy and commitment to education, is chairing Gilmour’s 75th anniversary gala, which will take place under tents on the campus in Gates Mills. The event will feature radio personality Andy Baskin, host of 92.3 The Fan and Sara Shookman, WKYC TV3 anchor, as emcees. Proceeds will benefit Gilmour’s tuition assistance program, student services and academic programming.
