The wake for retired Deacon William R. Starkey begins with vespers at 3 p.m. Sept. 29 in SS. Peter and Paul Church, 4750 Turney Road, Garfield Heights. Father John Schneider will be the presider with Deacon Paul Kutolowski as the homilist. Visitation continues until 8 p.m.
Deacon Starkey’s funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 30 in SS. Peter and Paul Church. Bishop Martin Amos, retired bishop of Davenport, Iowa, will be the main celebrant. Father Mike Matusz, pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish in Tallmadge will be the homilist.
Deacon Starkey, 69, died on Sept. 23.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy (Hryb), children and grandchildren.
He was ordained to the permanent diaconate for service to the Diocese of Cleveland by Bishop Anthony Pilla on May 10, 2003 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist
After ordination, Deacon Starkey was assigned to serve at Holy Trinity Parish in Bedford Heights. On Nov. 22, 2009, he was assigned to serve SS. Peter and Paul Parish. Deacon Starkey was transferred to serve St. Mary Parish in Bedford on May 1, 2015, where he ministered until his retirement on Oct. 20, 2020.
Those who knew him said his commitment to his diaconal ministry, his family and his desire to gather the community to work together for others inspired many.
Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.
