Students in grades 4-6 at St. Ambrose School in Brunswick used their creativity in computer science class to show their gratitude for veterans
They were challenged to use the engineering design process in TinkerCAD to create 3D designs that were entered into the Future Engineers “We Love Veterans’ contest, which designed a pin that showed appreciation for veterans. The top 10 winners will have their pin printed and distributed at the National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus, Ohio.
St. Ambrose of Milan, patron saint of St. Ambrose School, said no duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks. During November, the month of thankfulness, St. Ambrose students wanted to show their appreciation for the veterans who served their country.
When asked what inspired their designs for the pins, Ava D. said she loves America and “let my heart lead my design.” Aubrey R. said the American flag led the center of her design to express “her great honor and thanks for our veterans” and Connor L. said his design featured an angel because “angels are holy and watch over our veterans.”
STEAM teacher Jennifer Collings and Amy Morgan, technology director, worked with the students on the project. St. Ambrose offers STEAM classes – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics – as part of its curriculum for students in grades K-8. The classes focus on computer science, project-based learning opportunities, coding, typing skills and digital citizenship. St. Ambrose was the first designated STEAM school in the state.
