The wake for Father Joseph Cappelletti, senior priest-retired, begins with vespers at 3 p.m. Nov. 22 in St. Mary Church, 242 N. State St., Painesville. Bishop Edward Malesic will be the presider, with Father Steve Vellenga, St. Mary pastor, as the homilist. The wake will continue until 7 p.m.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Nov. 23 in St. Mary Church, with Bishop Martin Amos, retired bishop of Davenport, Iowan, as the main celebrant. Father David Bline will be the homilist.
Father Cappelletti, 91, died on Nov. 15.
He was born June 24, 1930 in Norma, Italy and joined the Brothers of St. Joseph Community in Italy at age 19.
As a Brother of St. Joseph, he taught at Lourdes High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico for five years and at Elyria Catholic High School 1965-1978.
Bishop Anthony Pilla ordained him on June 12, 1982 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for service to the Diocese of Cleveland.
His first assignment was as parochial vicar of Holy Redeemer Parish in Cleveland. On June 28, 1984, he was transferred to St. Mary Parish in Painesville to serve as a parochial vicar. Father Cappelletti was assigned as parochial vicar of St. Clare Parish in Lyndhurst on June 21, 1994 and on June 13, 2000, he was assigned as parochial vicar at St. Dominic Parish in Shaker Heights.
He was transferred on June 12, 2002, to serve as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Wickliffe, where he served until retiring on June 5, 2007.
Those who knew him said Father Cappelletti would be remembered for his kind heart and gentle nature. He loved the priesthood, Saint Mary Seminary and said he was grateful to be a member of the presbyterate of Cleveland.
Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Painesville.
