Ash Wednesday – March 2, 2022

“Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart. . . “ (Joel 2:12).

A good Lenten season begins with a decision to return to the Lord now. As it is said, do not put off until tomorrow, what you can do today.

What must we do today? The Book of the Prophet Joel said this: “Rend your hearts.” And how? “With fasting, and weeping and mourning.” Jesus will add prayer and almsgiving to the list of things to help us rend our hearts.

Lent should be more than a perfunctory exercise in putting on ashes, refraining from meat on Friday, and giving up candy. None of these practices are bad. But they only become good and worthwhile if they are expressions of what we feel in our heart, that we want - no we need - to make our way back to God and godly living.

When we pray – it must be a heartfelt desire for a relationship with God.

When we give – it must come from a heart of love for the poor.

When we fast – it must come from a heart that is hungry for God.

To rend our heart is another way of saying that we want to change our hearts and open them up to God’s word, God’s presence, and God’s way of living.

So, today is a day of decision-making. Do we decide to return with our whole heart or stay as we are with hearts unchanged?

What choice will you make?
