As St. Vincent Charity Medical Center continues its transformation to St. Vincent Charity Community Health Campus, new leadership is in place and some services are shifting to new organizations, including Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, which entered an agreement to continue the quality care of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center’s orthopedic services.
The Sisters of Charity Health System named Dr. Charles Garven as the new medical officer to provide clinical leadership for its ministries, including Regina Health Center, Light of Hearts Villa, St, Vincent Charity Health Campus and the newly named St. Vincent Charity Community Health Center on East 22nd Street in Cleveland, following its transition to an outpatient health care facility. The hospital stopped accepting inpatients earlier this month.
Additionally, Bradley Rauh was named chief administrative officer for St. Vincent Charity Community Health Center. Rauh most recently served St. Vincent Charity Medical Center as executive director of strategic initiatives, and played a critical role in helping transition the facility from a traditional acute care hospital into an outpatient health care services provider.
Dr. Garven, who joined the Sisters of Charity Health System in 2021 as a community health consultant, is a family physician who has also worked with Cleveland Clinic in several leadership roles, including as founding medical director for Rockport Family Medicine for Lakewood Hospital; lead physician at Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine, Rockport; and vice president of medical operations at the former Lakewood Hospital. He also brings critical experience leading outpatient health care services and working with free and charitable clinics, including with Neighborhood Family Practice and as the medical director at NorthCoast Health.
“In addition to his outstanding service as a family physician, Dr. Garven brings invaluable experience as a leader devoted to the mission of healing and serving underserved communities,” said Janice Murphy, president and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System.
“I am honored to serve the Sisters of Charity as chief medical officer as we embark on this new era of health care, building on their nearly two centuries of healing ministry in Cleveland,” said Dr. Garven. “We are focused on providing high quality outpatient care for the members of our community, with the goal of improving health outcomes.”
As chief medical officer, Dr. Garven’s responsibility includes leadership and oversight of patient safety, physician leadership development, clinical care quality and standards and urban medicine planning and initiatives. This role is important to the success of all Sisters of Charity Health System ministries, including St. Vincent Charity Community Health Center, the former St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood.
The newly renamed facility will provide outpatient care, including primary care, same-day and walk-in visits for adults, occupational health, an outpatient pharmacy, outpatient behavioral health services, outpatient addiction treatment at Rosary Hall and Psychiatric Emergency Services (formerly the Psychiatric Emergency Department). Patients also can receive occupational health services and urgent care services at the St. Vincent Charity Community Health Center campus in Solon.
Rauh brings significant health care executive experience to his new role. Previously, he served as chief operating officer and vice president of physician strategy of Southwest General Health System; chief operating officer, regional hospitals and president, Clinic regional physicians for the Cleveland Clinic; and vice president, business development for the MetroHealth System.
Crystal Clinic’s arrangement will provide patients of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center and Crystal Clinic, as well as the larger Cleveland area, with expanded access to Crystal Clinic’s nationally renowned orthopedic care.
The transition is underway for Crystal Clinic to provide orthopedic care at the current St. Vincent Charity Medical Offices in Independence, Solon, Westlake, Willoughby and Warren. This expands Crystal Clinic’s locations in Northeast Ohio to 17.
“Northeast Ohio is arguably the largest and most notable medical corridor in the world, so we recognize that St. Vincent Charity Medical Center had many options to consider for taking over their orthopedic and spine medical services. Our national reputation for delivering unparalleled patient outcomes, as well as our people-first philosophy of putting patients at the center of everything we do, gave them the confidence to entrust the care of their orthopedic and spine patients – and their legacy – with Crystal Clinic,” said Daniel Ferry, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center president and CEO.
Ferry, as well as Christopher Trella, Crystal Clinic’s chief financial officer, previously had positions at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. They said this ensures there is a high level of trust and confidence that the two organizations are aligned in their culture and mission.
“This is a time of transition for St. Vincent Charity Medical Center as we transition from inpatient and surgical care to focus on ambulatory services, such as outpatient mental health services, addiction medicine, primary care, internal medicine, specialty clinics and urgent care,” said Dr. Adnan Tahir, who served as president and CEO of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. “As we looked for an organization to transition our orthopedic surgeons and patients, Crystal Clinic quickly rose to the top of the list. I am most grateful for our relationship with Crystal Clinic – for our patients and our organization,” he added.
Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center is one of four out of the 6,090 hospitals in the nation and the only one in Ohio to receive The Joint Commission certifications in total hip, total knee, total shoulder and spinal fusion procedures. Crystal Clinic surgeons have pioneered new techniques that are advancing orthopedic care around the world, earning the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ highest rating for patient outcomes and satisfaction. Crystal Clinic also ranks first in Ohio and in the top 1% nationally by CareChex/Quantros Analytics for successful patient outcomes.
Along with orthopedic and spine surgeons from St. Vincent, also joining the Crystal Clinic team will be nurses, imaging technologists, physical therapists and support staff who worked at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center’s orthopedic offices and the St. Vincent Charity Diagnostic Imaging Center in Independence.
Patients who require a hospital stay for certain surgical procedures can receive their surgery and inpatient care at Crystal Clinic’s new award-winning, state-of-the-art hospital that opened November 2021 in Fairlawn. It is one of the only hospitals in the world dedicated exclusively to orthopedic and plastic/reconstructive care. This new hospital combines the most advanced surgical technologies in a soothing and restful environment that promotes healing and enhances patient experience.
“We are pleased to welcome the surgeons and health care professionals from St. Vincent Charity Medical Center to our team, and are working to make this a smooth transition for everyone,” said Ferry. “We also look forward to expanding our regional footprint, so we can better meet the needs of patients with convenient access to our nationally-renowned orthopedic care.”
The Sisters of Charity Health System was established in 1982 as the parent corporation for the sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in Ohio and South Carolina. The health system solely owns three health care ministries, six outreach organizations and three grantmaking foundations that address causes and consequences of poverty.
