Bishop Michael Woost spent some time with students at St. Ambrose School in Brunswick during his first visit there since being ordained auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Cleveland last August.

Greeting him were students who were fulfilling administrative roles at the school on Feb. 1, during Catholic Schools Week. They unfurled a welcome banner and posed for photos with the bishop before he toured the school and Littlest Angels Preschool across the street.

The bishop enjoyed learning about St. Ambrose’s Gillingham Innovation Center. He tried out a modern desk with wheels that can connect to other desks and allow students to collaborate for lessons or projects.

A group of student guides, Principal Lisa Cinadr and Assistant Principal Shelly Schenek showed the bishop around the school, introducing him to teachers and students and explaining about some of the projects and activities involving the classes.

The bishop enjoyed lunch and conversation with eighth-graders and the student administrators before heading to the church for Mass. Father Bob Stec, St. Ambrose pastor, joined the group for lunch and Mass.

“What makes St. Ambrose so special?” he asked the students. Their responses included education, faith and their teachers.

“Thank you for the warm welcome,” Bishop Woost said. “You have an awesome school community.”

He reminded the students that the most important thing they do is offer their lives as they seek the peace of God’s kingdom.

He told those gathered for the liturgy that at the seminary, he taught about the sacraments for 20 years and that Father Andrew Hoover, St. Ambrose parochial vicar, was one of his students. “I hope he’s teaching you well,” he quipped.

Reflecting on the reading and Gospel, Bishop Woost said Jesus had been away from his hometown of Nazareth and returned to preach. People didn’t realize who he was. Sometimes, a preacher makes God known buy the way he relates to others, sometimes by healing or relieving people of their sins, he said. Jesus developed a reputation for making God known to others.

In the temple, while he was reading, people were astonished because they knew his parents and wondered how he could offer such powerful words of wisdom and perform miracles. “It made no sense to them,” the bishop said, noting the people wondered how Jesus got such gifts from God.

They took offense with him, the bishop said. “He was coming across as something special but was really no different from them. They couldn’t accept who he was and what he was doing. Your school helps you develop your gifts from God and to use them well for others,” he said.

“You come here to believe in Jesus yourselves and in what God has done in your lives and for you,” he said, explaining that they should be like another Jesus for others “by becoming the person Jesus asked you to be. Do what he’s asking of you.”

Bishop Woost said Jesus wants them to use their gifts to invite others into a relationship with God. “We need to believe in the gifts we’ve been given and believe that they’re meant not just for us but to be shared and given to others. I know at St. Ambrose that you’re learning how to use your gifts and to develop them. We come together today to thank God for our gifts,” he said. The bishop told the students that Jesus loves them and they should believe in his love by doing what they can to believe in themselves.

He asked God to bless their school community and thanked them for their welcome.

“I hope you’ll invite me back. I’ll pray for all of you and I ask that you all pray for me and Bishop (Edward) Malesic,” he added.

Since it was Catholic Schools Week, Father Stec and Bishop Woost told the students they would get a special surprise at the end of the week: donuts with sprinkles. The news was received with cheers and applause.

The bishop greeted the students as they filed out of the church and headed back to their classrooms to finish the school day.
