News of the Diocese

February 16, 2023

The faithful throughout the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland will hear how they can contribute to the 2023 Catholic Charities Appeal during the in-pew launch of the campaign this weekend.

The theme for this year’s appeal is A time to heal. A time to help.

Bishop Edward Malesic said the launch of the appeal is the beginning of an important season in the diocese. “It’s a spiritual opportunity, a time to ask ourselves how can I make this my season in life to help and heal others?” he asked.

“Whenever I hear stories of real people helped and healed by the work of Catholic Charities, I can’t help but smile. I am so proud of the people of our diocese. Your generosity humbles and inspires me. You help transform countless lives as people begin a new and better season,” the bishop said.

The 2023 Catholic Charities Appeal set a $14 million goal to help those in need throughout Northeast Ohio.

The appeal, which is managed by the Catholic Community Foundation, supports Catholic Charities in Northeast Ohio, one of the region’s most significant health and human service providers. Catholic Charities assists more than 400,000 people in need annually throughout the diocese by offering 184 life-saving programs and services at 60 locations. Catholic Charities addresses the region's most pressing social issues such as homelessness, mental health and addiction, families in crisis, and care for the elderly.

Stories and videos of people whose lives have been transformed through the work of Catholic Charities can be viewed here. Featured are Kayla and D’Shawn, participants in the Catholic Charities Teen Leadership Program; Kira, who embraced the help of Holy Family Hospice during her parents’ final illnesses; Charlotte Rose, who found a new family through Catholic Charities Adoption Services; and Brianna, who found healing through Catholic Charities Mental Health Services.

“Let this be a time for you and your family to begin new season in your own lives as you help and heal others in Northeast Ohio,” Bishop Malesic said. “Together, let’s support and pray for the people served so faithfully by Catholic Charities.”
