News of the Diocese

March 8, 2023

The March/April issue of Northeast Ohio Catholic magazine is on its way to homes across the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland.

This issue highlights the newly launched Keeping the Faith initiative, a plan that aims to strengthen Catholic elementary education in the diocese. Readers will learn details of the plan, which was unveiled after five years of research, planning and input. Its goal is to strengthen the system of Catholic education in order to keep it irresistibly Catholic, academically excellent, operationally sound and geographically accessible across the diocese.

Bishop Edward Malesic recaps 2022 in his From the Bishop column. Strengthening Catholic education and focusing on the Eucharist were – and continue to be -- among his diocesan priorities.

With Lent underway, check out the meatless meal recipes to help keep Fridays days of abstinence.

The Catholic Charities 2022 Appeal launched in February. Its theme is “A time to heal. A time to help.” Learn how Holy Family Hospice in Parma filled that need for one woman who not only works there, but also experienced its ministry in her family.

In conjunction with St. Charles Borromeo Parish’s centennial, a parishioner was commissioned to create a pair of sacred paintings in the church. Artist Sarah Liptak talks about creating something beautiful for God.

Michael Garvin, a fourth-year student at Saint Mary Seminary, shares the story behind the real-time map he created to show Mass, confession and adoration times throughout the diocese.

It’s time for the sixth round of Nine Nights of Night Prayer – March 17-25 – at nine churches throughout the diocese. Find out which parishes are hosting the event and what will be the new ice cream flavor served on the final night.

This issue also examines why weekly Mass attendance is obligatory, why we should stand to receive Communion and how to make Lent more meaningful.

The usual features – Things to Do event listings, clergy assignment changes and News Briefs – also are included.

And Father Dan Schlegel gets the Last Word on “Is faith an antidote for life?”
