Today’s Gospel makes us aware that through this Lenten season we are heading to Jerusalem with Jesus, where he will be put to death and then raised on the third day.
In answer to the request of James and John, who wanted to be closest to Jesus in the Kingdom, Jesus asks, “Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”
It’s the same question that Jesus asks for all of us who want to share in God’s kingdom: Can we drink of his suffering and death, can we die to self, so that he might live in us?
Or, put another way, can we carry the cross that comes to us in so many forms by patiently following Jesus with faith, struggling against the strong headwinds we will face from this world if we do?
