Today, the Gospel begins with these words: “Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, ‘This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.’"
Think about that when you go to Mass this weekend. Once again, Jesus will be welcoming us to his altar table, he will be eating with us as we gather together, and he will even feed us with a food that is beyond words: his Real Presence.
And, reflecting further on the Gospel about the Prodigal Son who was welcomed home after a time of great foolishness, we do well to remember that those who were dead (who were lost) will always be able return again to find life at God’s family table. There is hope for everyone in this world.
How good God is! He welcomes us poor sinners and even eats with us.
