God is full of surprises. This is what Jesus pointed out to his audience, who were from the chosen race of Israel. Chosen or not, God, it seemed, worked outside of their nation and race.
So, it is a non-Jew, a widow in the land of Sidon, Jesus reminded his audience, who had received the blessing of God’s favor of food. No one else in Israel received that same favor, however, during the long famine.
It was to Naaman, a non-Jew, a Syrian, Jesus said, who was healed of leprosy rather than the many other lepers in Israel.
Because Jesus spoke in this way, the people in the synagogue drove him out of the town and tried to throw him over a cliff. But Jesus “passed through the midst of them and went away.”
Are we ever upset when God works with others, and sometimes seems not to be working with us? Remember that God is God, and we are not.
