Tuesday of the Third Week of Lent – March 14, 2023

I believe that one of the first steps in prayer is to realize how blessed we are – and to give God thanks for what he has done for us.

And then, realizing how blessed we are – we ask God how he wants us to use the blessings he has given to us. What do you want me to do, Lord, with all that you have given to me?

Listen well to the parable for today. A man owes a king a great amount, but the king reduces his debt out of compassion. Then the same newly released debtor comes across someone who owes him a much smaller amount than he owed the king. The man does not show any compassion toward the one who owes him this small sum of money. He has not learned the lesson of forgiveness and leniency.

Once the king hears that the man has not shown the same compassion that he received from him, the king requires payment in full as originally charged from that uncharitable person, as he throws him into prison for his incapacity to love as he was loved.

Jesus ends the parable by saying, “So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart."

Today, begin your prayer thanking God for blessing you with the gift of his forgiveness. Then ask God to show you what he wants you to do with the gift of forgiveness. As it was given to you, it must be given to others. The mystery is this: if we want to retain God’s blessing for ourselves, we must give it away to others.
