The story of Jesus before his resurrection is coming to its tragic conclusion. In today’s Gospel, he is a cause of division between those who believe in him and those who do not believe in him.
Some see his good works – giving sight to the blind, forgiving sinners, making the crippled walk, and proclaiming God’s love – and they believe that the savior has come. Others see the same things, but cannot believe that God is now walking among them in the person of Jesus. They see him as a mockery of God.
The life and teaching of Jesus demands that we take sides, for or against. Do we believe that Jesus is God among us (Emmanuel)? If we do believe, then the next few days are even more poignant as we are about to recall just what God went through out of love for us.
