Perhaps there is no more poignant day of the year than Good Friday.
Today, in a solemn and somber way, we remember the Lord’s death for the sake of our salvation. He could have denied that he was God’s son. He could have said that he was not the Messiah. He could have walked away from God’s program to save us. But, then again, had Jesus done that, we would still be floundering in our sins and without hope of heaven.
Thankfully, Jesus chose to tell the truth about himself. He told the world that he was sent by God to seek out the lost and to lead us back to the Father. He called himself God’s Son and made himself God’s equal. For that truth, Jesus was killed. He was obedient unto death and would never deny his Father, his Father’s will for him, or his true identity as God’s Son.
As you approach the cross today, during the veneration of the cross that takes place during the liturgy of Good Friday, do not just reverence the cross, but embrace it with your life. In a spiritual way, place yourself on the cross with Jesus, carry that cross too, for it is the wood of your salvation.
We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because, by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world. Amen.
