Auxiliary Bishop Michael Woost will celebrate the funeral Mass for Father William H. Severt at 11 a.m. April 11 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1905 Portage Trail, Cuyahoga Falls.

Father Severt’s wake was April 10 at Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home in Stow. Vespers were not celebrated.

Father Severt, 74, died April 8.

He was born on July 16, 1948 to the late Howard and Rose (Yost) Severt. Father Severt was educated at St. Vincent School in Akron, Borromeo High School and Borromeo College, both in Wickliffe, and Saint Mary Seminary in Cleveland.

Bishop Clarence Issenmann ordained him to the priesthood for service to the Diocese of Cleveland on June 8, 1974 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Clement Parish, Lakewood. He was transferred on May 1, 1975 to serve as parochial vicar at SS. Cosmas and Damian Parish, Twinsburg. He was named administrator pro tem on April 13, 1978. On June 24, 1980, Father Severt was appointed parochial vicar of St. Joseph Parish, Cuyahoga Falls. In addition, he served as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus No. 2362.

He was transferred on June 18, 1981 to serve as parochial vicar at St. Eugene Parish,
Cuyahoga Falls. During this assignment, Father Severt also served as a temporary assistant at Akron General Hospital, effective April 8, 1982. Father Severt was appointed parochial vicar of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Cuyahoga Falls on June 30, 1982. He was appointed chaplain of Euclid General Hospital on Jan. 16, 1986. During this time, he was appointed administrator pro tem of St. Peter Parish, Akron effective July 28, 1986.

On Nov. 25, 1986, Father Severt was named pastor of St. Peter Parish, Akron, where he served until he was transferred on April 30, 1990 to serve as parochial vicar at St. Peter Parish, North Ridgeville. He was appointed parochial vicar at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Parma on June 19, 1990. Father Severt was appointed chaplain of Marymount Hospital, Garfield Heights on June 16, 1999. He was transferred on Feb. 1, 2000 to serve St. Joseph Parish, Cuyahoga Falls as parochial vicar. On July 1, 2000, Father Severt was appointed chaplain of University Hospitals in Cleveland where he served until his retirement on March 1, 2017.

Those who knew him said Father Severt was a quiet man who attended to the sick and suffering with great care through his many years of hospital ministry.

Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Northfield.
