May/June Northeast Ohio Catholic magazine will arrive soon
The May/June issue of Northeast Ohio Catholic magazine, the official diocesan publication, will be arriving in homes across the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland very soon.

Much of the magazine will focus on Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology, which is marking its 175th anniversary this year. Learn more about its mission and ministry of forming priests for service to the 600,000-plus Catholics in the diocese. There is a timeline with important events in the seminary’s history, a look at the seminary leadership and a recap of the trip to Rome taken in March by 70 members of the seminary community. Highlight of the trip was a private audience with Pope Francis. There also is a link to the special message the pope delivered to the seminary group.

Get some insight on the changing of the guard at the seminary as Father Mark Latcovich, president/rector for the past decade, transitions to parish ministry as the new pastor of St. Ladislas Parish in Westlake, effective July 1. Replacing him will be Father Andrew Turner, a 10-year seminary faculty member and director of field service.

Father Mark Ott, an assistant professor and director of pre-theology at Saint Mary, shares a recipe for a special pasta dish he cooked for those on the Rome trip.

Also, a group of Borromeo (College) seminarians is working to create crucifixes from old bookshelves for the newly renovated rooms at the seminary. Learn more about this project and how it aligns with the pope’s Laudato Si encyclical.

It’s also ordination season so there is a preview of the six men who will be ordained to the priesthood on May 20 and the six men who will be ordained as permanent deacons on May 6. In addition, read about Deacon Michael Garvin who was ordained a transitional deacon on April 15.

Dozens of religious sisters, priests and brothers as well as diocesan priests and deacons are celebrating significant years of service to the Church this spring. Read more about this in the new issue, also.

The Catholic Conference of Ohio released a message on the sanctity of human life. There also is an accompanying piece on the “Protect Them Both” campaign that aims to defeat the statewide constitutional amendment seeking to expand abortion.

In his “From the Bishop” column, Bishop Edward Malesic shares some conversion stories he heard in recent weeks, proving the call to become Catholic remains strong.

Father Joe Krupp answers the question “Why is it still Easter?” in his “In the Know with Father Joe” column.

Mark your calendar for a series of ballpark Masses planned for this summer. Get details in the new magazine, which also includes the usual features: Things to Do listings, clergy assignment changes and clergy obituaries.

Once again, Father Dan Schlegel has the last word as he focuses on time.
