The sold-out 20th annual Borromeo Seminary golf outing once again drew golfers from around the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland to Silver Lake Country Club in Summit County.
A cadre of seminarians, seminary staff and event coordinators was on hand to assist golfers at the June 19 event. After the golfers registered and lined up in their assigned carts, Father Mark Latcovich who ended his tenure as seminary president and rector at the end of June, offered the opening prayer. Then the group hit the links for 18 holes of golf, skill competitions, lunch and finally a cocktail hour and dinner.

“This is my swan song after a dozen years,” Father Latcovich told the group before dinner. He was named pastor of St. Ladislas Parish in Westlake beginning this month.
Golfers heard from seminarian Alex Krukemeyer who received a challenge scholarship financed by funds generated by the golf outing. The event has raised more than $300,000 to help first-year seminarians since its inception.
Bishop Edward Malesic joined the golfers for dinner and expressed his gratitude for their generosity and support of the seminarians.
“Thank you to the generous sponsors, benefactors and golfers who made the outing such a success. The funds raised help our first-year seminarians who are boldly discerning the priesthood for the diocese,” the bishop said.
Alex, a parishioner from Our Lady of Victory Parish in Tallmadge, told the golfers that he is among the seminarians who benefited from the scholarship, which financed his room and board during his first year at Borromeo. He is entering first theology at Saint Mary Seminary in August and has been assisting at Holy Family Parish in Stow this summer.
“The seminary has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the Lord and of service. I’m learning how to become a disciple,” said Alex who entered Borromeo after high school. He said the seminary taught him an understanding of prayer and prayer life. “We come to the Lord in the liturgy,” he added.
“As you grow in the love of the Lord you also grow in the love of and for your neighbor. I’ve learned a lot about service and expanded service opportunities,” he said.
“I am grateful for my time at Borromeo and how the seminary shaped me. I also will be grateful for wherever the Lord leads me in the next few years. I am proud to see how this whole process mainfests itself,” Alex said.
