The wake for Deacon Carlos Rivera will begin with vespers at 3 p.m. Aug. 11 in Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave., Lorain, with Bishop Martin Amos, bishop emeritus of Davenport, Iowa, presiding. Deacon Rocky Ortiz will be the homilist. The wake will continue until 7 p.m. in the church.
Bishop Edward Malesic will celebrate the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Aug. 12 in Sacred Heart Chapel. Father Bill Thaden, Sacred Heart Chapel pastor, will be the homilist.
Deacon Rivera, 90, died on Aug. 3. Survivors include his wife Iris (Oliva), children and grandchildren.
Bishop Anthony Pilla ordained Deacon Rivera to the permanent diaconate for service to the Diocese of Cleveland on June 21, 1986 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.
Deacon Rivera was assigned to Sacred Heart Chapel in Lorain, where he served until his retirement on Sept. 17, 2002. The deacon spent much of his ministry working with recovering alcoholics and ministering to the incarcerated by visiting the prison regularly.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
