Holiday season Mass, confession schedule set for cathedral

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland has announced its Mass and confession schedule for the Christmas season.

Dec. 21-22 Mass will be celebrated at 7:15 a.m. and noon, with the noon Mass livestreamed, as usual. Confession will be available 6:30-7 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to noon, with extra confessors at midday. The cathedral will be open 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

On Dec. 23, Mass will be at 4:30 p.m. (vigil Mass) with confession 3-4 p.m. The cathedral will be open 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

On Dec. 24, Masses for the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. The 10:30 a.m. Mass will be livestreamed.

Masses to fulfill the Christmas obligation will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 (vigil Mass, which will be livestreamed and celebrated by Bishop Edward Malesic) and 10 p.m. A choral concert will precede the 10 p.m. Mass at 9:15 p.m. On Dec. 25, Masses will be at 9 and 11 a.m., with the latter Mass livestreamed. There will be no afternoon or evening Masses on Christmas Day.

Dec. 26-29, Mass will be celebrated at 7:15 a.m. and noon, with the noon Mass livestreamed. Confessions will be heard 6:30-7 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cathedral will be open 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The rectory office will be closed Dec. 26-29.

On Dec. 30, there will be one Mass at 4:30 p.m. Confessions will be heard prior to Mass, 3-4 p.m. The cathedral will be open 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

On New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, the feast of the Holy Family, Masses will be at 8 and 10:30 a.m., 12:15 and 5:30 p.m. The 10:30 a.m. Mass will be livestreamed and the cathedral will be open 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

On Jan. 1, 2024, the feast of Mary, Mother of God, Masses will be at 9 and 11 a.m. Jan. 1 is not a holy day of obligation in the United States in 2024.

The Mass schedule for Jan. 2-5, 2024 is 7:15 a.m. and noon, with the noon Mass livestreamed. Confession will be available 6:30-7 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cathedral will be open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Jan. 6, 2024, Mass will be at 4:30 p.m. with confessions available before Mass from 3-4 p.m. The cathedral will be open 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that day.

Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024 will be the feast of the Epiphany. Masses will be at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 and 5:30 p.m. The 10:30 a.m. Mass will be livestreamed. The cathedral will be open 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

In addition to the weekday and Sunday livestreamed Masses, a Sunday Mass is broadcast at 10 a.m. on WUAB Channel 43. Cox Cable subscribers can view the Sunday TV Mass at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on channel 45. A special Christmas Day Mass will be broadcast at 8 a.m. on WUAB.

The Sunday Mass also can be heard at 9 a.m. on radio station WINT 1330 AM and at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday on radio station WCCR AM (The Rock).
