In remembrance – Father Jerome J. DukeThe wake for Father Jerome J. Duke, senior priest-retired, will take place 1-5 p.m. Jan. 28 at Monreal Srnick Funeral Home, 35400 Curtis Blvd., Eastlake. There will be no vespers.

Bishop Edward Malesic will celebrate Father Duke’s funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Jan. 29 in St. Mary Magdalene Church, 32114 Vine St., Willowick. Father Damian Ference, vicar for evangelization and head of the diocesan Parish Life and Special Ministries office, will be the homilist.

Father Duke, 81, died on Jan. 21.

He was born Aug. 9, 1942 to the late John and Katherine (Bunyak) Duke. Father Duke was educated at St. Francis of Assisi School in Gates Mills, Cathedral Latin in Cleveland, Borromeo High School in Wickliffe and Saint Mary Seminary in Cleveland.

Father Duke was ordained to the priesthood for service to the Diocese of Cleveland on May 25, 1968 in St. John Bosco Church, Parma Heights, by Bishop Clarence Issenmann.

His first assignment was as parochial vicar of SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish, Lakewood. He was transferred on June 18, 1970 to serve as parochial vicar at Christ the King Parish, East Cleveland. On April 20, 1977, he returned as the parochial vicar of SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish, Lakewood, where he was later named pastor on April 12, 1999. He served there until his transfer on April 21, 2010 to become parochial vicar for Our Lady of Angels Parish in Cleveland. He was named administrator of Our Lady of Angels Parish on Jan. 19, 2011. Father Duke retired on Nov. 1, 2013.

Those who knew him said Father Duke would be remembered for his storytelling, dedication and ministry to the Slovak community and for his gentle smile.

After cremation, there will be a private interment at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon.
