Jesus indicates that our fasting is a way to remember that he is not with us in the same way he was with his apostles. He is the bridegroom who has been taken away from us. Yes, it is certainly true that Jesus is with us in the sacraments. He is with us in the Scriptures. He is with us in the poor. He is with us by the Spirit that we have received from him. But he is not walking with us in the same way he walked with those first disciples. And so, one of the reasons that we fast is to show our longing for his return. And he will return for us!
When you fast (and you can fast more than the prescribed days of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) let the grumbling of your empty stomach be a sign of your hunger for Jesus to return in glory. On that day, the feast will be incredible!
