The Pharisees and scribes asked Jesus a good question in today’s Gospel reading: “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Why did sinners call Jesus their friend?
If the same accusers were alive today, they would wonder why we go to Mass, knowing that we too are imperfect people – just like the sinners in Jesus’ day. And Jesus comes to us as he came to eat and drink with tax collectors and other sinners.
Jesus has a good response: “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”
Do we go to Mass because we are good? Or do we go to Mass because we need a physician for our souls? Are we seeking healing and health by coming to Jesus, or do we think that we are doing him a favor by coming near to him?
“Oh Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”
