Jesus has a different take on greatness than most people. Greatness is not shown by the honors and awards we receive, or by being seated at the head table at a dinner or having a reserved parking space at work. True greatness is found in humility. True greatness shows itself in the person who is willing to give his or her life for someone else. True greatness is found in Christ on the cross. It is found in the ability to love without counting the cost.
Jesus said, “Whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Greatness is found in giving oneself, not in preserving oneself.
On the way to greatness, we must pick up our own crosses, serve one another, and follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Greatness is found in our willingness to be like Jesus. Serving others, working for their good and seeking the best for them, is a core value in those the Lord considers to be great in the Kingdom of God.
