In the parable from today’s Gospel, Abraham ends his discussion with the tormented soul in the afterlife by using very ominous words. In rejecting the man’s request to send someone from the dead to warn his brothers, who are still living, that they need to reform their lives, Abraham says, “If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.”
What greater proof have we of the Lord’s dominion over us than his Resurrection? Yet, how many truly believe that Jesus has such Lordship over them? And why do they not believe? Because they do not know that he is alive – risen from the grave.
May we never make that mistake ourselves!
And may the manner of our living and tending to the needs of those at our doorstep be a sign that we have given ourselves to the living Christ, risen from the dead, and allowing him to rule over us.
