Fifth Sunday of Easter — April 28, 2024

If we separate ourselves from Jesus, we will continue to live — but only for a time. We will never truly thrive.

Think of a leaf that is separated from its vine — it will stay green for a while, but it will not be alive for very long. It will eventually wither up and blow away.

Every living thing needs nourishment from something else. It needs connection.

Every branch needs a vine.

Every soul needs Jesus.

Jesus says to us today: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither."

Jesus tells us that it is vitally important to remain connected with him and, by implication, we must also remain in union with the other branches that are connected to him (which we call the Church).

Let’s resolve to stay together with each other and, most importantly, with Jesus. We are only branches that receive our strength, nourishment, and life from the vine. This is the only way we will bear much fruit as His disciples.
