“Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” These familiar words from the Gospel of St. Matthew hold special meaning to Christians everywhere, but especially for those members of the Catholic Cross Bearers Motorcycle Ministry. Focused on serving those on the streets and imprisoned, the Cross Bearers seek to be ministers of Christ’s love. On June 22, they gathered for Mass and a motorcycle blessing at Our Lady of Peace Church, alongside Bishop Edward Malesic and Father Gary Chmura, Pastor of Our Lady of Peace.

“And as we pray to God, we do so through the intercession of St. Columbanus, who was born in Ireland in 543,” noted Bishop Malesic. “St. Columbanus’ wanderings and apparent fondness for the open road first inspired Anglican bishop John Oliver, and then the Vatican, to name him as the patron of those whose preferred mode of travel is two motorized wheels.”
Following in the example of St. Columbanus, the Cross Bearers take to the road to minister to those most in need: the poor, marginalized, and imprisoned. Their ministry is one of evangelization, but also presence – helping others recognize that Christ loves them as sons and daughters made in his image and likeness. As Christ sought out those on the margins of society, so, too, do the Cross Bearers, searching for those in need of hope and peace.
The Cross Bearers Motorcycle Ministry is 16 years old and has about 20 members scattered throughout Northern Ohio. Cross Bearers are baptized and practicing Catholics, faithful to the teachings of the Church and its hierarchy. You’ll recognize members by their signature black vests and distinct purple and white Cross Bearers patch.
Bishop Malesic highlighted the group’s important work during his homily, “So, as you show your love of God by performing your corporal works of mercy ‒ meeting people no matter where they are, whether in a nursing home or hospital or even in a jail cell ‒ and praying for them, know that you can count on the Holy Spirit to be with you in fruitful times and in challenging times. Plant your seeds of faith in others and trust in God that through His Holy Spirit, their faith will flourish in time.”
Mass concluded with a blessing of motorcycles and ministry vehicles in the parking lot of Our Lady of Peace Church. Click here to view a video of this blessing service.
