I am heartbroken at hearing the news of the death of Cleveland patrol officer Jamieson Ritter, who was killed in the line of duty early today, the day we celebrate our freedom. It is because of men and women like Officer Ritter, who are willing to lay down their lives to protect us, that we are privileged to celebrate our nation’s independence. There is no greater love than this, Jesus said, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Officer Ritter’s life, which was dedicated to service to others, truly exemplified that selfless love.
Officer Ritter and his partner were recently recognized as “officers of the month,” for their multiple, courageous efforts to save lives this year. He also proudly served our country as a member of the Ohio Army National Guard, further evidence of his ongoing commitment to protect and serve.
Please join me in praying for Officer Ritter’s family, friends and loved ones, asking God to lift them up and carry them through this terrible time of loss and grief. And ask Jesus, our Savior, to comfort, strengthen and protect Officer Ritter’s colleagues and all first responders, who will carry on and follow his example of generous service for our safety and freedom.
At a time when we are sorely in need of true heroes, we will count Officer Ritter among the very best. May we never forget, nor fail to honor, his sacrifice and his steadfast commitment to caring for our community. May God reward his sacrifice with eternal life.
