The 34th Bishop’s Golf Classic was held on Aug. 5 at Westwood Country Club, and it was once again a sell-out. The event raised more than $142,000 to benefit and support Catholic school “teachers, technology and tuition.”

Tom McKrill, principal of Lake Catholic High School, addressed the golfers, benefactors and guests. He shared his perspective on the importance of funding from events like the Bishop’s Golf Outing that help the schools, the families and the students who attend them. Members of the Lake Catholic girls’ golf team also were on hand to greet the golfers and sponsors as they arrived. Bishop Roger Gries, who has attended every year since the golf outing first started, began the day with prayer.

Bishop Edward Malesic spoke to the participants, pointing out the many benefits of a Catholic education. “We are here today to support our Catholic schools. I know many of you have benefited from the foundation of a Catholic education, and that some of you have seen your children and grandchildren experience the rewards that come from an education framed by Gospel values. This is an incredible gift.”

Bishop Malesic said that Catholic education is of key importance to evangelizing the mission of the Church, calling our schools the largest and most important ministry within the diocese. “Our schools are great at equipping each child to become a lifelong learner and critical thinker who leads and serves those around them. At our Catholic schools, you will find that we are not just teaching faith as a subject, we are living it.”

Proceeds from the 2024 Bishop’s Golf Classic will help fund “the three T’s:”

  • Tuition: A total of $3.5 million was awarded in 2023 to more than 4,000 students with financial need through the Diocesan Tuition Assistance program, and funds raised will continue to support DTA in 2024.

  • Teachers and Principals: Support from the golf outing will be invested in the professional development of Catholic school leaders as they seek to implement innovative teaching practices that maintain high educational standards.

  • Technology: Funds will be invested in cutting-edge technological resources and training to enhance students’ learning experiences and ensure they have access to the digital tools they need to succeed.

Bishop Malesic expressed his appreciation for our Catholic school administrators, teachers, and staff members. “They continue to do amazing work and remain the heart of our Catholic schools, student-focused and community- oriented, and centered on the teachings of Jesus Christ.”

Winning the first place team award with a -14 were a foursome from Equidox, an event sponsor: Pat Needles, Dan Needles, Mike Needles, and Matt Cooper (not pictured).
