The wake for retired Deacon George J. Reiland will begin with vespers at 3 p.m. Aug. 21 in St. John Bosco Church, 6480 Pearl Road, Parma Heights. Auxiliary Bishop emeritus Roger Gries will preside with Deacon Ed Gardias preaching.
Bishop Martin Amos, retired bishop of Davenport, Iowa, will celebrate Deacon Reiland’s funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Aug. 22 in St. John Bosco Church. Father Don Oleksiak, moderator of the curia and vicar general, will be the homilist.
Deacon Reiland, 97, died on Aug. 15.
He was ordained to the permanent diaconate for service to the Diocese of Cleveland by Bishop Anthony Pilla on June 4, 1983 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. After ordination, Deacon Reiland was assigned to serve Blessed Sacrament Parish in Cleveland. On June 1, 1988, he was assigned to serve Our Lady of Angels Parish in Cleveland, where he ministered until his retirement on Oct. 2, 1992.
Survivors include his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Eleanor (nee McCoy), his wife of 62 years, predeceased him, as did a son. Deacon Reiland was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran and a retired math teacher for the Parma City Schools.
There will be a private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park.
