Members of the Faithful Apostles, a group of faithful who have donated to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland, for a dozen or more years, were recognized at the noon Mass Sept. 30 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. The group is organized by the Catholic Community Foundation, which supports the mission of the Diocese of Cleveland to provide support for the spiritual, educational and charitable needs of people throughout Northeast Ohio.

Bishop Edward Malesic, who celebrated the Mass, noted that the group is about 10,000 strong. Those attending the livestreamed liturgy were asked to stand and be recognized. After Mass, they were invited to pose with the bishop for a group photo.

“I’d like to be part of your group, but I’ve only been here for four years. I plan to join you in eight more years,” the bishop quipped.

He told the congregation Sept. 30 was the feast of St. Jerome, patron saint of many causes, including archeologists, biblical scholars, librarians, students and translators.

Reflecting on the Gospel, the bishop said Jesus placed a little child in the midst of the group gathered before him, illustrating that the least will be the greatest.

“Jesus taught this lesson through his own life. He humbled himself to become one of us. God, who is the greatest, served the least,” the bishop said. He compared this to those who give to charitable causes like Catholic Charities, explaining that they serve the least – those with the greatest need.

The bishop said the goal is to become saints in heaven and that by serving others and caring for those in need, we can achieve that goal.
