As the Muslim community throughout Northeast Ohio begins Eid al-Fitr celebrations, I offer greetings of peace and joy on the conclusion of your month-long vigil of fasting, introspection, prayer and works of service. This year, the rare occurrence of Ramadan and our season of Lent fall in close proximity on the calendar, and just as you looked forward to this time of festivities, we look forward to celebrating Easter at the end of our 40 days of Lent. May this spiritual convergence of Ramadan and Lent show the world that faith can be a source of unity and understanding.
In the spirit of empathy and a hope that never disappoints, let us continue to share both our joys and sorrows as neighbors, and rejoice in God’s love for all, which is the foundation for a harmonious existence of the one human family.
As Pope Francis has said, “From empathy comes the sharing of attitudes and sentiments on the occasion of important events, both joyful and sad, in the lives of our relatives, friends and neighbors, including those from other religions: their joys become ours, their sorrows become ours as well.”
On this day of celebration, I offer my prayerful best wishes to you and to your families. May your lives give glory to the Almighty and bring joy to you all.
