Jesus reminds us that the Old Testament testified to his coming. Throughout history, God was preparing his people for the Savior. Jesus is that savior. Unfortunately, as prepared as they were, many of his own people did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah when he finally came among them.
John the Baptist also had a role to play in preparing God’s people for Jesus. Jesus called him a burning and shining lamp. John was leading the people to Jesus, of whom he said, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Still, as persuasive as John was, some didn’t believe him.
We were also prepared by others to see the Lord when he comes to us in our sacraments, Scriptures and in other ways. Our parents, grandparents, and religion teachers taught us about Jesus so that one day we would accept him as our God with all our heart, soul and mind.
Like those who helped us to see Jesus walking in our midst, we must also prepare a way for the Lord in the hearts of others. We pray for people to accept Christ. Perhaps, if we show that Jesus makes this life-giving difference in our lives, others will want to have what we have, a relationship with him. In the end, however, the choice is up to them. But let’s do our best to help them make the right choice and prepare them to see Jesus when he comes. Certainly, let’s never put an obstacle in their way.
