The chief priests and Pharisees were upset that the guards did not arrest Jesus when they had the opportunity. But these guards answered them by saying, “Never before has anyone spoken like this man.” The Pharisees thought that the guards had been deceived. Nothing, it appears, would convince the Pharisees that Jesus was who he said he was, the one who was sent from God to redeem the people of Israel.
How often do we meet people who remain unconvinced about the divine nature and saving mission of Jesus?
We must pray for them. But we must also pray that we are convinced ourselves that Jesus is the Son of God, the Word made flesh. And we will only be convinced when we say with the guards, “Never before has anyone spoken like this man.”
