We are now one week away from Good Friday. The stage is being set for the passion of Jesus. At this point in the Gospel people wanted him dead. And where did he go? He went back to the beginning, back to the place where John first baptized him. He went back to where he began his public ministry, where the sky opened and the dove descended, and the voice of the Father said, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”
Sometimes we need to go back to the beginning too. When we are tempted to doubt our identity as a son and daughter of God we should go back to the time when we accepted our baptism and came to know God’s fatherly love and plan for us. As we remember God’s love for us and remember God’s plan for us, we will be able to face whatever may come. This was what Jesus did – he remembered his call and God’s care for him – then he was able to face Calvary. May we never forget what God has done for us in Christ Jesus our Lord. It will help us to move forward in faith.
