Mary, the sister of Lazarus, lavished her pure love on Jesus. She anointed his feet to soothe him. She dried his feet with her hair in a sign of pure devotion. The oil was expensive, and Judas complained that it could have been used for the poor. But Judas could not care less about the poor. He was a thief and would steal out of the collection basket. You see, Mary was using the money on Jesus. Judas was using it on himself.
Selfishness – it is at the heart of every sin.
May we rid ourselves of it. May it never lead us astray like Judas. May we be generous with our love. May we pour it out on Jesus, who poured out his blood for us. May we generously give our love to the poor, for Jesus himself was made poor for us.
