Statement from Bishop Edward Malesic on the election of Pope Leo XIV

I rejoice with the rest of the world at the announcement that the next successor of St. Peter has been named by the College of Cardinals under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Pope Leo XIV, as the Roman Pontiff, will shepherd us with love, proclaim the Gospel with fidelity, serve those most in need, and be the visible sign of our unity as believers in the Lord Jesus, risen from the dead.

I pledge my prayers and support to our new Holy Father, and ask the same of the People of God in the eight counties of the Diocese of Cleveland. May God give Pope Leo every gift he needs to minister to us as pastor of the Universal Church and beyond.

This good news fills me with joy and peace, and for that I give all thanks and praise to Almighty God.
