New cross installed atop Elyria Catholic High School

Those driving past Elyria Catholic High School on Gulf Road in Elyria may notice something different.

A new, larger cross was installed earlier this month atop the school building, symbolizing EC’s Catholic identity and its commitment to faith, tradition and excellence, school officials said.

The custom cross was crafted to better match the scale and structure of the building. It was lifted into place beginning at 8 a.m. on June 14.

“This cross is more than an architectural element,” said Annie Heidersbach, EC president. “It stands as a daily reminder of our mission to learn, worship and serve, guided by Catholic tradition. When our students return in August, we’ll gather as a community to bless the cross and reflect on the faith that unites and guides us,” she added.

In honoring EC’s history, the original cross that long stood atop the clock tower will be refurbished and preserved. Plans are underway to determine a fitting place on campus where the refurbished cross can continue to serve as a symbol of the school’s faith-filled legacy.

The cross is the latest in a series of improvements at the co-ed high school, which was established in 1947. Previously, the outdoor athletic facilities were renovated. Last year, a new floor was installed in the Coliseum (gym) and the Coach Bob Guinta Court was dedicated in December 2024.

EC, the first Lorain County Catholic school to be recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, has 529 students in grades 9-12.
