Statement from Bishop Malesic on the police officer shooting and death in Lorain, Ohio

News of the Diocese

July 28, 2025

It is with a heavy heart that I ask for continuing prayers and support for the three Lorain police officers who were shot on July 23 in the line of duty, and for their colleagues and their families. They sought to keep us safe from harm and protect our communities. We are grateful for their service and mourn the loss of the officer who paid the ultimate price of his vocation. Together, let us pray especially for the family and friends of Officer Phillip Wagner, who passed away the following day. May he rest in peace and in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and may his wife and children, his mother, siblings, and other family members, find comfort in the love and support of our community.

Please join me in asking our Lord for the full recovery of his fellow officers, Brent Payne and Peter Gale, who were injured and will need ongoing support in their journey to healing. Pray for their mending also, from the devasting loss of their brother in blue.

May all those affected by this tragedy find solace, comfort and peace through the grace and love of our Lord during a time that is incomprehensible, and beyond our understanding.

Eternal rest grant unto Officer Wagner, O Lord, and let your perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
