Today Jesus tells us, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do.” He speaks these words as he faces criticism from the Pharisees and scribes for eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners.
The Pharisees and scribes failed to recognize how spiritually ill they were. Because of that blindness, they ultimately rejected the healing Jesus offered. The tax collectors and sinners, however, knew they had fallen short. And when Jesus extended God’s mercy to them, they eagerly accepted the cure.
That leaves us with a simple but challenging question: Do we recognize our own need for Jesus to restore us?
