Jesus tells us plainly, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” With these words, he invites us to empty ourselves of pride.
As an example of pride, Jesus points to the scribes and Pharisees. They enjoyed fame, power, and recognition. They loved titles and places of honor. They spoke about God, but they did not live what they preached. In the end, they were full of themselves rather than full of God.
We cannot be that way.
As we continue our Lenten journey, we should ask: Am I empty enough for God’s Spirit to fill me?
